Every third Saturday of the month, the Irvine Open Space Preserve allows access to trails normally marked as ‘closed’. This includes inner tracks between the popular Quail Hill and Bommer Canyon sites. On regular days, if you are caught on these trails – reserved for guided tours only, in order to protect the habitat – you will be heavily fined. And given the fact that every single time I’ve been out on a long run on these trails, I have passed rangers in trucks and on bikes, I’ve never wanted to press my luck.
But on the these special ‘Wilderness Access Days’ – every third Saturday on the month – these closed trails are open to the public from 8:00am – 2:00pm. There are some fun hilly single tracks for trailrunning and mountain biking – and a blast to explore the gorgeous inner canyon.
Take a look at the map. All of the trails in YELLOW are the ones open on this day only.
See you out there!
